While I don't post on the FP all that often, I occasionally have something of value to add to an article, yet my comments are always grayed out. Perhaps this means I should comment more and try to get the editor's respect, but I feel like there are many other oppoites like myself that are strong contributors to Oppo, yet are grayed out on the FP.

You'll get it after a while, be patient. I did, but I was just posting regularly an put some work into it.

To them, what you do on Oppo means nothing on the FP in the same way that being a FP god doesn't mean the mods on Oppo will make you a member.

Oh yea I totally get it, and I'm not begging for authorship, mainly because I don't really/haven't really posted on the FP enough to warrant authorship, but it is kind of frustrating having something constructive to say and having it grayed out.

When someone reads your constructive post it will be promoted, and thus not grayed out anymore. Assuming the promoter does have authorship that is.

Pretty sure you won't be greyed out now.

Well, there are a couple of things with this.
First off, as much as I'd like to help you, Oppo admins have no control over anything that happens on the FP. That's solely the domain of Gawker employees like Matt, Travis, Orlove, etc. They have to be the ones to sit down once in a while and manually go through and "follow" commenters in order to allow them to comment outside of the gray mist. Also note that authorship and the ability to comment are two very different things - don't expect authorship on the front page. That's just not happening for anyone that isn't a Gawker Media employee.
As for how to get approved commenter status, I don't know if there is any other way than to have Matt, et al. "follow" you. If it makes you feel any better, however, many of us look through grat comments all the time for gems to be promoted.

Right, the authorship/ability to comment verbage is confusing. I just want ability to comment.
And fair enough, I'll just have to start commenting on the front page more often.

I simply asked Matt in a comment on the Morning Shift and he granted it.

I had to grovel. And grovel some more.

If it makes you feel better I'm real quick with the * button on good grayed out posts. It took a lot of them for me to get my commenter status so I return the favor.
Side note- sick ratrod.

I've gotten COTD a few times and AOTD multiple times, even coined the phrase Power Dick, still grayed out.

I would shitpost less and contribute more if approved commenters couldn't just look through grayed out posts and copy my insight and infinite wisdom. No helping my own cause, but, you know, what are you gonna do (besides bitch in oppo).

I don't understand the whole greyed out/not greyed out thing. Is there somewhere where the "rules" are posted?

As far as I understand, while you are grayed out, your comments do not immediately appear on posts, they are hidden under the show more section of the comments at the bottom. If your comment is grayed out and an author or a moderator recommends it, it will no longer be grayed out and be grouped with the rest of the non-grayed out comments on that particular post. You can become an author through a moderator granting you authorship privileges, (which means your comments will no longer be grayed out automatically) which they do often enough on Oppo, but I am still grayed out on the front page.
